The projects that have received investment from the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-2013 are listed here under the Programme Priorities from which they have been supported. Alternatively, you may download a list of all beneficiaries in alphabetical order. NB: Beneficiaries are organisations receiving ERDF investment for a project. The ERDF shown is the amount committed to a project, this may change through a contract variation but will be adjusted to actual amounts invested when the project is completed. Eligible expenditure is the amount that is eligible for ERDF support, this may be less than the project’s total costs as that may include expenditure which is ineligible for ERDF support.

Description: Providing an innovation centre for technical textiles including close to the market R&D. It will support a range of environmental improvements and use of nano and plasma technologies to produce fabrics which are self-cleaning or conductive fibres to make smart clothing that monitors the wearers body functions and dressings that monitor wounds, prevent infection and deliver medication.

Project: Institute of Product and Process Development (IPPD)

Description: This project is a collaboration between the Institute of Process Research & Development (IPRD), in the school of Chemistry at the University of Leeds and the Innovative Physical Organic Solutions (IPOS), Department of Chemical & Biological Sciences, at the University of Huddersfield. The Universities will be collaborating for marketing and referral purposes as the Institute of Product and Process Development (IPPD) bringing together the expertise in both institutions and facilitating a significant investment in new equipment, facilities and staff to support the region’s fine chemicals sector. Businesses will be able to engage with the staff and facilities at the universities to conduct collaborative research and development work, developing new products and leaner processes. The cost of initial engagements will be discounted for SMEs. An industry club will be formed to drive university research and support applications for research grants. The project will work closely with other initiatives and schemes in the region such as the Particles and Pharmaceutical Centres of Industrial Collaboration.

Project: Utilising Synergies in Nanomanufacturing to Accelerate Innovation

Description: This project builds on the distinctive and impressive nanomanufacturing technology business exploitation activities in the Yorkshire & Humber region, and the established best practice technology transfer expertise that exists within the partner higher education institutions. It aims to increase and promote this high technology innovation to help build the knowledge economy of the future within the region and begin to generate substantial economic benefits. Additionality will be achieved through a regional collaborative network of universities and companies each able to contribute in niche areas, but together can provide solutions and opportunities for business development.  Through wider promotion, leveraging of current contacts and resources, and stimulating new investment in innovation this will lead to rapid development of technology into products that will bring benefit to the region through high technology business growth including job creation and job retention. Activity will be a combination of networking with business (via a variety of formats), collaborative project building to deliver new processes and projects, project resourcing and delivery, and focused support to commercialisation of new technologies.

Description: This provides specific targeted financial support to large companies wishing to accelerate R&D and innovation activities but who cannot bear the full risk themselves. Up to 50% of eligible costs of R&D projects are available to be granted via a competition. It is anticipated that at least 30 projects will be supported

Description: This project aims to deliver innovative ways for SMEs to interact with the Knowledge Base to increase productivity and company sustainability. Support will take the form of an easy-to-access innovation voucher providing funding for an innovation project to be undertaken by a knowledge base supplier of the SMEs choice. Innovation Vouchers is a national scheme which forms one of the seven innovation products in the business support simplification programme as a means generating new collaborations between SMEs and the knowledge base.

It comprises three capital elements: expansion of the University's Heslington East site to include knowledge transfer business space; Food & Environment Research Agency (FERA) - remodelling and refurbishment of underutilised laboratory and office space for science-based businesses within a specialist technology centre; Bio-refinery Demonstrators – Creation of a semi-scale bio-refinery to research and optimise processes for the production of chemicals and bio-fuels from bio-based waste materials.

Description: ERDF is supporting one strand of a multi-strand suite of employment projects that are designed to address worklessness issues in Hull. The strand: Maintaining Employment Contract provides a job-brokerage service linked to local employers, promoting inclusive recruitment practice and supporting employers with job-matching, advertising and accessing the broadest population of applicants.

Description: Middleton Enterprise Centre  will provide a physical enterprise presence in the heart of one of the City's most deprived communities and will be the primary vehicle through which an enhanced Leeds LEGI Programme will be delivered in this particular part of South Leeds. The Centre will be a two-storey new build and will act as a central ‘hub’ in terms of encouraging and stimulating entrepreneurialism and self-employment within the target communities. The Centre will provide networking and hot desk space for budding new businesses, using the existing ‘Pay as you Go’ tariff model adopted by the existing catalyst centres in Leeds, as well as office accommodation of various sizes for up to ten additional commercial and social enterprises.

Description: The Humber TA (Technical Assistance) will take on the role of brokering and developing partnerships and consortia to take advantage of the drive towards larger more strategic investment of ERDF monies. The Humber TA Project will ensure a single point of contact, linking complementary ideas within the sub-region and identifying where a broader delivery mechanism may be more appropriate linking in with other regional TA projects. Humber TA will be proactive in identifying where proposals from the Humber region not only meet strategic objectives from the Regional Economic Strategy and Cross Cutting Themes but through a series of events, workshops and master-classes ensure that all partnership members are fully aware of the aims, opportunities and requirements of the ERDF 2007- 2013 Operational Programme and the Regional Economic Strategy (RES)

Description: This project has two strands: Create and !nnovate. Create coordinates ERDF activity, raises awareness of the Programme and maintains and develops links with ERDF projects across the Leeds City Region. Innovate provides a resource to develop and conduct joint planning and coordination relating to the innovation agenda and focuses on making links between HE-led projects

Description: South Yorkshire Technical Assistance seeks to improve the implementation, monitoring and control of ERDF in South Yorkshire. The Grant Recipient (Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council) and the five Delivery Partners; (Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire Forest Partnership and Dearne Valley Eco Vision), will co-ordinate ERDF activity and raise awareness of the ERDF 2007-13 Operational Programme in South Yorkshire. South Yorkshire Forest Partnership will increase the number of projects coming forward under Priority 4 from South Yorkshire, and the Dearne Valley Eco Vision will increase projects coming forward in the Dearne Valley. The South Yorkshire Forest Partnership and Dearne Valley Eco Vision elements of South Yorkshire TA will help to raise awareness of sustainable development and environmental good practice issues among existing and potential project sponsors across South Yorkshire. The South Yorkshire TA project will support the development of partnerships that will ultimately generate ideas suitable for future ERDF applications. The activity of the partners will increase the number of projects approved by the ERDF 2007–2013 Operational Programme and will ensure that ERDF adds value to LEGI and WNF funding programmes and tackles deprivation with regard to worklessness and enterprise effectively.

Description: This project encompasses those parts of the Technical Assistance strategy where Yorkshire Forward is in the lead, delivering partnership and consortia development of ERDF projects to meet targets, appraisal, contracting, claims and auditing of ERDF projects, publicity and information, evaluation, development and implementation of cross cutting themes and overall programme management.
