Events in Parliament

We hold regular events at the House of Commons to ensure MPs and Peers are kept up to date and can raise questions about our work in their constituencies or the wider region. If you’re interested in our events in parliament the following may be of interest:

  • In December we hold a surgery for MPs and Peers where senior Yorkshire Forward staff, including the Chair and Chief Executive, are made available for questions at appointed times.
  • In the summer we hold a more informal event to provide information about specific areas of our work and allow those who are unable to make definite appointments to drop in at a convenient time.

Events in the Region for Local Councillors

As part of our new duty to involve, brought in through recent legislation, we want to build on our existing community links by engaging more closely with local Councillors.
We are planning information sessions for elected members so that they can find out more about our work in their wards and local authority areas. Click here to find out more.

Party Conferences

In previous years we have had a presence at each of the three main political party conferences and TUC Congress to inform decision makers about the work we do and build relationships with political partners. The events were held in conjunction with One North East and the North West Development Agency.

From 2009 we have used party conferences as an opportunity to arrange meetings with regional politicians and their staff, including Councillors, MPs, MEPs and Lords but have not held formal events.

Communicating with Politicians

Quarterly Newsletter and Twice Yearly Economic Briefings

We send out a regular newsletter every three months to MPs, MEPs and Peers to keep them informed of the work Yorkshire Forward is doing across the region and in their areas. We also send out an economic briefing every six months, which looks at specific aspects of the region’s economy by Local Authority Area. We always try to provide constituency level data where possible.

Economic Updates

Since the start of the recession our Chair has been keeping MPs, Peers and Business Organisations up-to-date on the region’s economic situation and actions that are being taken to minimise the impact on the region’s economy. This takes the form of a letter that goes out every 6 – 8 weeks.

Working with the Public Sector

Public Sector Communications and Letters to Local Authorities

Local Authority Leaders and Chief Executives are kept up-to-date with our activities through a quarterly newsletter from our Chief Executive. They are encouraged to respond to the newsletters and highlight any areas of concern to enable us to act on these. We also request that the information in the newsletters is disseminated throughout the Local Authority to ensure consistency of messaging.

Economic Information Sessions with Local Authorities

As part of our ongoing work to build ever stronger relationships with Local Authorities in the region, we have been holding joint Economic Information Sessions with Local Authorities across the region. The aim is to keep staff and other local partners up-to-date with economic changes brought about by the economic downturn, and spark debate and an exchange of information.

Our Chair and Chief Executive have used these events to engage with a cross section of private and public sector partners, prompting some interesting questions and opening several debates on how we can expand and continue our support for businesses through the recession.
