Get more from broadband in North Yorkshire
Businesses in North Yorkshire, which is largely rural, have been at a disadvantage due to difficulties with access to high-quality, high-speed broadband and digital services.
NYnet has been set up to create a network offering higher-quality, faster broadband to the public sector, offering improved services for public organisations such as schools, universities, council offices and many others across the whole of North Yorkshire.
What’s in it for businesses?
European state aid and competition regulations mean that NYnet cannot directly offer services beyond the public sector—ie not to businesses or householders. However, Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund have provided NYnet with the funding necessary to use the extra capacity of this network to open up the market to internet service providers (ISPs).
NYnet is in a unique position to help ISPs carry this massive increase in demand for bandwidth throughout a significant proportion of North Yorkshire. NYnet is currently working with local ISPs to deliver enhanced services to business parks and to businesses in certain locations. Such services include:
- VoIP—extremely low call costs and no telephone line rental charges
- Firewalls—protecting businesses from internet threats
- Disaster recovery—remote offsite backups are now a reality, because of the fast upload speed offered by fibre-optic connections.
- Hosted applications—high internet speeds mean fast access to off-site application servers
- Faster downloads and uploads—fibre-optic networks are significantly faster than copper-based networks.
- Remote access—remotely connecting to the office from home or from a customer/supplier site can be a painfully slow experience using ADSL.
- Video conferencing—this has been ‘blue sky’ for most organisations until now. The practical, commercial and environmental benefits of reducing the travel necessary to get together (without losing the undisputed value of a face-to-face meeting) are now within easy reach.
Who’s behind NYnet?
NYnet was established by North Yorkshire Country Council with support from Yorkshire Forward and Government Office Yorkshire & Humber. The private-sector technology partner is BT.
