The Centre for Food Robotics and Automation
BERR has identified the food sector as a major growth area for the application of automation systems. Food and drink is also one of Yorkshire Forward’s priority sectors.
By applying appropriate and cost-effective levels of automation, the food processing industry can benefit significantly by increasing its productivity, reducing problems associated with labour supply and retention, improving hygiene and traceability requirements, and reducing wastage and product rejects.
This is why Europe’s first Centre for Food Robotics and Automation (CenFRA) has been set up at a prestigious facility on the Crompton Business Park, Doncaster, South Yorkshire. It provides a leading resource readily available to food and drink processing companies of any size.
What’s does CenFRA do?
CenFRA promotes links between industry and academia: providing an impartial source of automation expertise; acting as a focal point to pilot equipment and technology; and identifying and assisting in the transfer of technologies from other business sectors. CenFRA:
- Encourages greater understanding of robotic and automation engineering, assembly, programming and maintenance needs
- Conducts technology audits for businesses
- Develops relationships between food and drink companies and the automation/robotic industry
- Provides a facility for research, information and industrial training
- Acts as a catalyst for higher levels of investment
- Helps companies develop unique skills and expertise
- Enhances the longer-term sustainability of the food and drink sector.
Who works at CenFRA?
CenFRA is made up of a team of engineers, researchers and technologists from the distinguished Advanced Robotics Department within the University of Salford. They are all highly experienced in the field of food-process engineering and automation technology.
How is Yorkshire Forward involved?
CenFRA is funded principally by Yorkshire Forward, with additional support from the Northern Way and in partnership with the country’s leading robotic and automation development centre at the University of Salford.
