In the quest to bring urban snowsports to a larger mainstream audience, Briton Engineering Developments Ltd joined forces with the Polymer Centre of Industrial Collaboration (Polymer CIC). Briton Engineering have developed ‘Snowflex’, an innovative ski and snowboarding surface, and although the company had generated significant overseas interest in the product, a concentrated research and development programme was required before the company could launch an export drive.

The Polymer CIC was able to provide a cost effective blend of research and individual staff expertise, resulting in improved product design and better material selection for vital components. By arranging the polymer fibres in the product to provide forwards and sideways friction, the Centre was able to ensure that ‘Snowflex’ mimicked real snow more closely than traditional artificial surfaces.

The improved design of the ‘Snowflex’ surface has proved more stable and reliable, with improved all round performance. Durability has been enhanced, and in turn, lower service input is required. More importantly, safety has improved dramatically. These improvements have enabled Briton Engineering to access new territories outside the UK.

Working with the Centre has given Briton Engineering the confidence to export the new and improved ‘Snowflex’ to new markets. By embracing new technologies and expertise, the company has been able to produce an exceptional product.
