Food Chain CIC

The food industry is the largest manufacturing industry in the UK and is increasingly reliant on science and technology to formulate new products, increase quality, improve processing techniques and take advantage of emerging technologies.

Yorkshire and Humber has some of the most advanced scientific and technical resources anywhere in the world, and to help the food industry take greater advantage of them, Yorkshire Forward has established the Food Chain Centre of Industrial Collaboration (CIC) at the University of Leeds.

Combining the expertise of the Universities of Leeds and York and The Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA), the Centre provides an all inclusive service for food companies and acts as a conduit for regional and national funding to support food research.

Services include:

  • Hygienically designed food pilot plant.
  • State-of-the-art imaging and microscopes.
  • Food safety, chemical safety, microbiology and genetic finger-printing.
  • Cryogenic methods to develop more efficient chilling and freezing processes.
  • Controlled environment rooms to help explore food storage issues.
  • Advanced electronics development laboratories and bespoke instrumentation development.
