Galpharm International, based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, is the leading private label medicine supplier in the UK, delivering innovative products to the healthcare market. In order to improve the robustness of one of their tabletted products, Galpharm called upon the formulation and manufacturing process optimisation expertise of the Pharmaceutical Innovation Centre of Collaboration (Pharmaceutical Innovation CIC).

The Centre’s experts produced and tested a variety of samples, using compaction simulators and artificial intelligence formulation software in their small-scale formulation laboratory, to assess the effect of scale and compression force on different formulations. This process led to a heightened understanding of both the optimal ingredients and manufacturing conditions required to produce robust tablets. The will enable Galpharm to produce a superior, higher quality product, which will ultimately benefit the consumer.
 
The improved formulation will also enable Galpharm to run their manufacturing processing equipment more quickly, without tablet breakages. By reducing both the timescale of production and the amount of rejected tablets, Galpharm are now predicting a significant upturn in both productivity and profitability. With a single minded approach to the project, working to and meeting business deadlines and budget, the Centre formulated a stronger, higher margin tablet within one month. Working independently, Galpharm would not have achieved these results in such a short space of time.
