Malvern Instruments Ltd & Particle CIC
“Our alliance with the Yorkshire Forward Particle Science and Engineering CIC has significantly increased the efficiency of our business. Malvern is generating an additional 10-12 system sales each year, with a value of several hundred thousand pounds.”
David Higgs Business Development Manager Malvern Instruments Ltd
Established for more than 30 years, Malvern Instruments Ltd is a world leading manufacturer of systems for particle characterisation and rheological property measurement. Sustained business growth for the company relies not only on instrument sales, but also on the continued extension of its applications expertise and support.
In July 2004, Malvern approached the Particle Science & Engineering Centre of Industrial Collaboration (Particle CIC), based within the Industrial Centre of Particle Science and Engineering (ICPSE) at the University of Leeds, with a view to increasing efficiency by following an outsourcing model for its contract testing business. Together the two organisations formed a strategic business alliance in which Malvern awarded the centre exclusive UK rights to undertake paid characterisation services on its behalf, making Leeds the first centre in the world to achieve Malvern Approved Independent Analysis Laboratory status.
The Centre’s high level expertise and leading edge facilities have enabled Malvern to focus on instrument sales and applications development without the need to reduce its contract analysis business. The alliance has already freed up valuable time for Malvern’s applications team to undertake more in-depth method validation for customers, thereby shortening the sales cycle and maintaining the company’s pioneering position in the development, manufacture and comprehensive support of instrumentation and applications.
As a result of the alliance, Malvern is generating an additional 10-12 system sales per year, valued at several hundred thousand pounds. Since being awarded the Malvern contract in July 2004, the Particle CIC has worked on 111 individual projects with 86 companies in this region and beyond (covering all major market sectors), generating more than £40,000 of income.
Benefits of working with the Particle CIC:
- Increased business efficiency
- Increased instrument sales through increased capacity
- Increased customer satisfaction
- Business retention
