Redundancy can be a difficult time, and with so many different support offers to help businesses who are making redundancies, the help can be overwhelming.  Yorkshire Forward are working in collaboration with various support agencies and have listed the advice with contact details below to help businesses

ACAS

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) is an organisation that aims to improve working life through better employment relations.  This is achieved by working with employers and employees to solve problems, supplying up-to-date information, independent advice and high quality training.

You can obtain clear, confidential and impartial advice on employment rights, practices and redundancy from their website or by calling their telephone helpline.

ACEVO

ACEVO is the professional body for the third sector's chief executives, with over 2000 members. They have been providing support and advice to members for over 20 years with a view to increasing the sector's impact and efficiency. ACEVO have set up a support website to help charities and voluntary organisations through the recession. The website contains a range of guidance from funding and fundraising to mergers and management during the downturn. ACSOL

Apprenticeships

BIS

BIS is the Government Department for Business, Innovation and Skills responsible for regulating and safeguarding employee and consumer rights in the UK.  The Department gives guidance on how to treat redundancies appropriately and relevant notification required for collective redundancies.

Business Debtline

Business Debtline is designed to help any business which has cashflow or debt problems, providing a free confidential advisory service.  The service provides practical advice that is designed to help you successfully manage your way through your financial difficulties.  Business Debtline can also provide help especially for small businesses or persons who are self-employed.

Business Link

Business Link is a free business and support service available online and through local advisors.  Business Link Yorkshire offers help on how to build and develop your business through these tough times, including planning ahead to avoid redundancies and advice on how to deal with redundancies if necessary.

Chartered Management Institute

The Chartered Management Institute is the chartered professional body that is dedicated to management and leadership, committed to raising the performance of businesses. The Institute of Business Consulting in association with the Chartered Management Institute is pleased to announce the launch of a new redundancy support service enabling individuals to speak directly with a redundancy counsellor.

The campaign, Dr Redundancy, is open to members and non-members who can access:

  • a free telephone consultation with a trained specialist
  • free-to-download resources covering issues such as how to identify transferable skills and understanding the legal position of redundancy
  • practical tips on what to do immediately after being made redundant
  • the ability to post questions for Dr Redundancy to answer and share experiences of dealing with job loss

Insolvency

Insolvency is the inability to pay one’s debts.  The Insolvency Service provide initial information on insolvency and redundancy legislation and procedures, including redundancy payments offices and bankruptcy.

Institute of Leadership and Management

The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) is leading on learning and development for managerial staff, providing events, training courses and a community of over 30,000 leaders and managers committed to improving their performance.

Skills Funding Agency

The Skills Funding Agency (SFA) is the agency responsible for improving the UK workforce by upskilling young people and adults.  The Skills Funding Agency fund the ‘In Our Hands’ campaign to encourage individuals to train and upskill and the ‘Train to Gain’ fund to encourage businesses to improve their workforce and competitiveness. 

Yorkshire Forward’s Enhancement Fund has improved the Train to Gain service in Yorkshire and the Humber allowing more flexibility to the courses delivered and 100% subsidy for workers who are facing redundancy.  During the economic downturn, it is even more important to improve the skills base of your remaining workforce.

Works for You

Works for You is a free mentoring service.  It aims to support people in Yorkshire & the Humber with diplomas, degrees or equivalent qualifications who have been made redundant, are under threat of redundancy, or who simply feel that their career development prospects in the region are limited by the current recession.

You will undertake an initial assessment, receive one-to-one coaching and support, and be matched with a mentor with high-level experience in the business world who will give you further guidance and support.  You will also have access to a range of relevant training courses and workshops.  The project will help you to develop your employability and secure the career opportunity you deserve.

The project is managed by Hull University Business School, but their mentors operate across the region and mentoring can take place via email or telephone as well as through face-to-face meetings.  The Business School has a successful track record of supporting people  through mentoring and e-mentoring.
