Housing in Yorkshire & Humber

Yorkshire Forward has a responsibility for considering how interventions around housing can help to deliver the Regional Economic Strategy.

The goal is to create “strong regional housing markets that are more responsive to changing demand, by establishing strong regional housing bodies which will better integrate decisions on housing with those on economic development, planning and transport” (2002 Spending Review).

Our work in this area includes:
  • Building effective partnerships
  • Working across our internal directorates, where housing investment links in with business and the environment
  • Working with the Regional Housing Forum and Regional Housing Board at a strategic level
  • Working with sub-regional housing forums and other key players at a strategic level
  • Working with the region's two Housing Market Renewal Pathfinders (Gateway in Hull & the East Riding, and Transform South Yorkshire) and advising on how their work can contribute to the economic agenda
  • Contributing to and influencing the development and implementation of regional and sub-regional strategies and investment plans, ensuring the alignment of the Regional Housing Strategy with the Regional Economic Strategy
  • Sitting on the steering group for the first regional youthbuild co-ordinator, to develop the concept and delivery of youthbuilding projects across the region
  • Working with the Northern Way’s Sustainable Communities Workstream to create truly sustainable communities.

The Regional Housing Board

Yorkshire Forward sits on the Regional Housing Board, which is responsible for producing a Regional Housing Strategy as the basis of advice to ministers on strategic housing priorities in the region. We help to ensure that it is within the context of the region’s strategic framework, Advancing Together, and is consistent with the region’s other key strategies (notably the Regional Economic Strategy, the Regional Planning Guidance and the Regional Transport Strategy, which forms an integral part of the Regional Planning Guidance).

Yorkshire and the Humber's Regional Housing Board 's role is to:
  • Advise ministers on strategic housing priorities in the region, through the production of a Regional Housing Strategy
  • Advise ministers on the allocation of resources allocated through the new ‘single regional housing pot’
  • Position the Housing Strategy alongside the region's other key strategies and act as a major contributor to their delivery.

The Regional Housing Strategy

Thanks to work undertaken by the Regional Housing Forum, the region began moving from the previous Regional Housing Statement 2002 update towards a full strategy. The priorities here are:

  • Regeneration and neighbourhood renewal
  • Provision of sufficient new homes, catering for mixed-income and sustainable communities
  • Improving homes to meet decent standards and to meet people’s aspirations
  • Fair access to quality housing for all groups.
