Property in South Yorkshire

The South Yorkshire Strategic Development & Property team develops regeneration projects in Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

They manage direct development projects, and they assist partners with the Sub Regional Investment Planning process, helping them to bring their projects to a standard at which they can be considered for Yorkshire Forward funding.

Much of the team’s time is spent problem-solving with partners, delivering projects and providing strategic development and property advice.

Current projects include:
  • Public-realm-based environmental improvements
  • Helping partners to develop projects (such as the proposed refurbishment of The Crucible, Sheffield)
  • Managing the demolition process of the former student union, Nelson Mandela Building, in Sheffield
  • The Barnsley markets
  • The Advanced Manufacturing Park, Rotherham.

Sheffield’s city-centre renaissance

Sheffield is the principal commercial and administrative centre for South Yorkshire and, with a population of around 540,000, the fourth-largest city in the UK. In recent years Sheffield's industrial focus has moved from heavy manufacturing towards a knowledge-led economy based on high technology, culture and the sciences. The 2020 vision for Sheffield is for a prosperous city, embracing ICT and advanced manufacturing industries, and building on the skills provided by the city's two leading universities as well as the area's traditional industries.

Sheffield is now well on the way to achieving the renaissance of its city centre, with benefits beginning to ripple out across the rest of the city. We've worked closely with Creative Sheffield, the UK's first economic development company, which has absorbed the former urban regeneration company Sheffield One and now takes the lead responsibility for achieving the city’s economic transformation together with other key partners. Our Strategic Development & Property team works closely with Creative Sheffield.

Some major schemes have already made a huge difference to the city centre, thanks to partnerships which have delivered the Heart of the City, City Hall/Barkers Pool, Castlegate, E-Campus and Sheffield Station Gateway improvements.
