Isle of Axholme

The Isle of Axholme was once an inland island, surrounded by rivers and marshland. But, in 1626, King Charles I commissioned the Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden to drain the area with a complex network of dykes. As a result, rich agricultural land was created and a number of small market town settlements developed, in particular Crowle and Epworth, which are the largest settlements in the Isle of Axholme. The towns are linked by the A161 and each has its own distinct, attractive character. Both settlements have excellent road links, with good bus links to Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Goole and Gainsborough, and both have easy access to Robin Hood Airport.

Spawforth Associates was appointed as the lead advisor for the RMT programme in the Isle of Axholme from April 2004 to December 2005, working to a brief which included developing a fully operational and sustainable town team, whose role it is to drive the RMT process forward.
