Knaresborough

Situated in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, Knaresborough is a picturesque, medium-sized, historic market town built along the River Nidd. The town boasts castle ruins and spectacular views over the Nidd Gorge. It is also home to Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well. Knaresborough is mentioned in the Domesday Book and Knaresborough Castle dates from Norman times. Knaresborough is also the site of the oldest chemist shop in England, opened in 1720. There is also the Courthouse Museum in the castle grounds.

Although a market was first mentioned in 1206, the town was not granted a Royal Charter to hold a market until 1310, by Edward II. A market is still held every Wednesday in the market square. Highlights in the Knaresborough social calendar include the Bed Race and feva (Festival of Entertainment and Visual Arts) who are responsible for instigating the Knaresborough Town Windows.
