Northallerton
Northallerton, the county town of North Yorkshire, is the largest market town in Hambleton District. It is located between the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks. The town originated as a Saxon settlement, Alfred's Farm, but gained significance after the Norman Conquest under the Lords of the Manor of the time, the Prince Bishops of Durham. They built an imposing summer palace, used throughout the Middle Ages by themselves and their royal guests. The Battle of the Standard was fought in 1138 to the north of the town, with the Anglo-Normans winning over the Scots. The town's affluence was assured when various monarchs granted fair and market rights. Wednesday and Saturday markets, and an annual May Fair, continue to this day.

Northallerton is on the East Coast Main Line with services to London, Scotland and the North East. The A1 can be accessed via the A684 at Leeming Bar and the A1(M) via the A167 at Darlington. Durham Tees Valley Airport is also easily accessible (15 miles).
