Graduates Yorkshire
Summary
Yorkshire Forward has partnered with Yorkshire Universities to create Graduates Yorkshire, a service designed to retain talented graduates within the region.
In a 2000 survey, 30% of the region’s HE graduates said they left the area after graduation because there were ‘no jobs in Yorkshire’. Furthermore, our region has fewer economically active adults (qualified to NVQ 4 or above) than the UK average.
Our region has the highest concentration of higher education (HE) provision outside of Greater London. We attract hundreds of thousands of students every year—but retaining this talent within Yorkshire & Humber is more of a challenge. And this, in turn, presents a problem for competitiveness within the business base and, in turn, economic development.
To improve levels of graduate retention and recruitment within the region, Yorkshire Forward partnered with Yorkshire Universities to create Graduates Yorkshire, a web-based service at www.graduatesyorkshire.info.
The service provides a single gateway to graduate guidance and employment vacancies, as well as a section on why Yorkshire & Humber is a great place in which to settle and work. The service is delivered by the careers services at the universities of Bradford, Huddersfield, Hull, Leeds, Leeds Metropolitan, Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, York, Trinity and All Saints College and the College of York St John.
There are two key beneficiaries:
- Students and graduates get a unified approach to careers guidance as well as access to employment opportunities.
- Businesses get fast access to the region’s graduates by advertising vacancies on a single database.
