Introduction

  • Thousands of gamers flock to the region
  • Continuous high profile media interest
  • The region's game industry is championed

Summary

The profile of the region's games industry received a massive boost as Leeds played host to Europe's biggest games trade show, the Eurogamer Expo on 27th and 28th October 2009. The UK's media gathered to witness 4000 gamers swarm to The Royal Armouries to be amongst the first to test out some of the biggest upcoming titles, including world exclusive premieres of Aliens vs Predator, God of War III, Assassin's Creed 2, Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Screen Yorkshire and Game Republic, both funded by Yorkshire Forward partnered with Eurogamer to bring the sell out event to Yorkshire to help showcase that the region, home to 3 of the top 100 best performing games companies in the world, is right at the cutting edge when it comes to the rapidly expanding £4 billion games industry.

As well as attracting 4000 gamers from across the UK to the region, the Expo generated a huge amount of national media interest giving Yorkshire’s games industry a massive boost.

Game Republic, the trade association for the games sector in Yorkshire and Humber, promotes and provides support to the industry through a range of initiatives, investing in games projects, creating better links with academia, developing relationships with international publishers and championing collaboration through hosting regular networking events. In 2007 Game Republic was fully integrated into Screen Yorkshire enabling the games sector in the region to access its strategic investment funds, supported by Yorkshire Forward.
