The Lighthouse Group
Introduction
Yorkshire Forward’s support of Charity Bank in the North has helped set up a centre of excellence which supports disaffected young people in turning their lives around.
Summary
Young people who have been excluded from school, are at risk of exclusion or are at crisis point in their education can get a second chance with The Lighthouse Group (TLG), a national, award-winning charity.
A new TLG Centre of Excellence opened in Bradford in 2008 with help from Charity Bank in the North, to which has provided expertise and a unique funding opportunity. The centre will provide disaffected young people in Bradford and Leeds with educational programmes offering an array of services, including GCSE-equivalent qualifications, which will help them to turn their lives around.
TLG helps the victims of social breakdown to re-engage in education and/or employment. These young people may have experienced family breakdown, bereavement, drug/alcohol abuse, bullying, poverty, gang culture, mental or other illness, lack of parental support and many other distressing circumstances.
What is Yorkshire Forward’s connection with this initiative?
In 2007, we became the first regional development agency to invest in a charity bank to support the voluntary and community sector in our region. Yorkshire Forward has invested £9.75m in Charity Bank in the North http://www.charitybank.org/About_Us/Where_we_operate/Charity_Bank_in_the_North.aspx to help third-sector organisations become more sustainable and make a greater contribution to the region's economy.
