The Deep in Hull
Introduction
Yorkshire Forward funding helps to bring over 2 million visitors to Hull since 2002.
- Opened in 2002, it has already welcomed over 2 million visitors from around the world
- It has an education program with an average of 20,000 school visits a year passing through its dedicated classrooms
- 2.5 million litres of water and 87 tonnes of salt housed in an iconic structure designed by Sir Terry Farrell
Summary
The Deep is one of the most popular visitor attractions in our region and funding from Yorkshire Forward enabled the previously derelict site to be reclaimed, prior to any construction work beginning.
It's a charitable public aquarium which is home to over 40 sharks and 3500 fish and it is dedicated to increasing people’s enjoyment and understanding of the world’s oceans.
As well as a tourist attraction, The Deep is a centre for marine research. Behind the scenes a team of dedicated marine biologists look after all of the animals in The Deep’s collection as well as carrying out vital research into the marine environment.
As a member of the European Union of Aquarium Curators (EUAC), The Deep also works in conjunction with the Fish and Aquatic Invert Taxon Advisory Group (FAITAG) on conservation projects of National, European and Global significance.
