Yorkshire Windows Company
Introduction
- Less waste sent to landfill each year by the regions’ largest window company
- New contracts won as a result of the companies’ greener credentials
Summary
The region’s largest window company has reduced its waste disposal costs and now send less waste to landfill
CO2Sense, wholly funded by Yorkshire, has supported the region’s largest window company based in Rotherham to reduce its waste disposal costs and send less recources to landfill.
Double glazing specialist Yorkshire Windows is now recycling more than 60 per cent of the company’s total waste, including glass, wood and plastic - thanks to advice and support from CO2Sense.
Ben Stone, CO2Sense's Glass Project Manager visited the company and quantified the huge cost of waste disposal. CO2Sense was able to direct the company to three local recycling schemes for each of its main sources of potentially recyclable waste.
For glass, the company is now taking advantage of the free collection service offered by GB Cullet of Barnsley. More than 50 tonnes of glass are sent for recycling every month.
CO2Sense also made the company aware of the Recovinyl recycling scheme, which is run by the uPVC industry. Yorkshire Windows is now paid for every tonne of uPVC it sends for recycling, and for every tonne of material which is recovered from used windows.
About 20 tonnes of wood is taken away for recycling into chipboard by Leeds based recycler Timberpak. A charge is levied for the service – however this is less than general waste disposal costs of £50-£60 per tonne.
Yorkshire Windows improved environmental credentials have also helped it attract new business. It recently earned a contract to replace the windows in Rotherham housing stock – a deal helped by the company’s achievement of the ISO14001 environmental management system following its introduction of recycling systems.
