Ampleforth College

Introduction

One of North Yorkshire’s most rural schools is enjoying super-high-speed internet thanks to NYnet, the county’s biggest ISP.

  • 5 times more broadband power than any competitor could offer
  • Enables teachers and students to use video-conferencing and access college files remotely
  • Helps boarders to stay in touch with friends and family in real time.

Summary

Ampleforth College, a Benedictine school under the guidance of the monks of Ampleforth Abbey in rural North Yorkshire, had been struggling with communications. Mobile-phone signals were poor and local ISPs could only offer 2Mbps.

However, the college has signed a five-year contract with the region’s leading broadband provider, NYnet, to obtain a 10Mbps broadband connection—that’s 5 times more bandwidth than competitors could offer.

This access will have a positive impact on pupils, boarders, teachers and parents by allowing real-time communication with parents, many of which live overseas. Additionally, the school can take full advantage of remote file access and video-conferencing.

NYnet is a public- and private-sector commercial venture which provides multiple, high-quality communications services to citizens, business and public sector bodies. It is working with BT to deliver, monitor and maintain the network to the highest standards.
