Community Junction
Introduction
A new service at Hull Paragon Train Station helps people with difficulties to regain their confidence about using public transport.
Summary
Community Junction, at Hull Paragon Train Station, is the result of a combined project by the private, public and community sectors to help those who have problems with using public transport. The initiative provides advice about public transport and disabled access, supports social enterprise, and offers enjoyable volunteering opportunities.
Created inside the station’s historic former ticket office and managed by TravelExtra, the new centre has ten offices for let to public and voluntary sector organisations and social enterprises (such as Victim Support and Hull & East Riding Institute for the Blind). The service provides advice, support and solutions to enable people to confidently use public transport again, and hires out mobility scooters.
Community Junction returns a Grade-II listed building to full use, thus protecting the city's heritage while enabling it to serve a useful purpose for today and tomorrow.
The project is the first of its kind on a railway station in the UK, and has been supported by train operator First TransPennine Express and Network Rail with funding from Yorkshire Forward, Hull City Council, Business Link, Railway Heritage Trust, and the Acorn Trust.
The home secretary, Rt Honourable Alan Johnson MP, described the centre as 'money well spent'.
