The Stanley Works Ltd

Introduction

A grant from Yorkshire Forward was the catalyst for further private investment, in which 125 jobs will be safeguarded and 2 jobs created at a plant Rotherham .

Summary

This was a £5,330,100 capital expenditure project in which 125 jobs will be safeguarded and 2 jobs created in a plant in Hellaby Industrial Estate, Hellaby Lane, Hellaby, Rotherham South Yorkshire S66 8HN.  The plant manufactures Stanley branded hand tools.

The project is to improve productivity and reduce costs on 3 product lines; trimming knife blades, chisels and steel rules.

The American parent company Stanley Black & Decker chose to invest in the Hellaby plant for both trimming knives and chisels because of the case put forward by the local management team.

In recent years the Company has faced increased competition from cheaper goods manufactured by other companies in the Group and third party vendors especially in China and the Far East. The Company has an on-going strategy of keeping its machinery as modern as possible to enable costs to be kept to a minimum and to carry out R&D to continuously improve existing products and launch new and innovative products into the market place.

The Project was completed in a number of phases with the trimming knife blade production line being in place mid 2008. Following this the company upgraded the Chisel grinding section with the latest grinding technology available during 2009. Unfortunately due to the achievable quality and processing issues the planned investment in the rule manufacturing process was not taken up although the product is still manufactured on site. Overall the Company has spent a total of £3,152,315 against grant paid of £601,472 resulting in 125 jobs safeguarded; 2 jobs created and products currently being in-sourced from Asian vendors back into the facility in Rotherham.
