Shipping and Governments: An Uneasy Partnership - The Annual Peter Thompson Lecture

Dr Helmut Sohmen, chairman of shipping industry heavyweight BW Group Ltd, will deliver the annual Peter Thompson guest lecture at the business school this autumn, where he will share his vast professional experience and discuss the increased involvement of government in the maritime industry. In its fourth consecutive year, this prestigious event is held in recognition of the generosity of Dr Thompson OBE, LLD, JP in endowing a chair in the business school, which is currently held by Professor David Menachof. Join us on Thursday 28th October from 6pm at the Hull University Business School.  
Previous speakers have included James Hughes-Hallett, chairman of the global Swire Group, and Christine Loh, OBE one of Time magazine’s ‘Heroes of the environment’ and this year’s event promises to be equally insightful. Dr Helmut Sohmen is Chairman of BW Group Limited, which controls a large fleet of tankers, gas carriers, and offshore units. Trained as a lawyer, he joined the shipping industry in 1970 and has been head of the enterprise since 1986. Throughout his career Sohmen has also been active in community affairs and in industry organisations, as a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, President of the Baltic and International Maritime Council, Chairman of the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation, and International Chairman of the Pacific Basin Economic Council.
