Hear from Lord Digby Jones on Monday 27 September 2010 2.00 pm at the Hull University Business School. From recession to recovery, UK businesses are fighting back. Across every sector, organisations are attempting to stimulate trade, attract investment and ultimately protect and increase profits. But in this uncertain climate, what does the future hold and how can businesses guarantee survival? Lord Digby Jones will give his opinion on this subject in a thought provoking lecture to be held at Hull University Business School on 27 September 2010. During his presentation, Lord Jones will explore the future of British business. He will examine what needs to be done by business and government to encourage enterprise, consider the importance of academic institutions to the creation of enterprise and innovation, and will explore the role that Universities have to play in preparing businesses to survive in the global economy.
Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham, has had an illustrious career in the public and private sector. After graduating from University College London in 1980, he went on to have a successful career in Law, working for organisations such as KPMG. In 2000 he joined the Confederation of British Industry as Director-General and worked tirelessly to promote business – taking the British business message to over 70 different countries, internationalising the organisation and opening CBI offices in Washington DC and Beijing. He was recognised for his services to business and appointed a Knight Bachelor in the 2005 New Year Honours’ List. Following his departure from the CBI, he has undertaken a number of senior corporate advisory positions and in 2007-08 held the office as Minister of State for Trade & Investment and was appointed a life time peer in the House of Lords. He now runs his own successful business and works with a range of top British Companies including HSBC, Triumph Motorcycles, Babcock International Group plc, Jaguar Land Rover and JCB Lord Jones now sits on the cross benches in the House of Lords and appears regularly on television, radio and in the newspapers, being known for his firm and forthright views on the globalised economy. He is also a Business Ambassador for UK Trade & Investment.
