Chengdu Hi-tech Zone:

- 16,000 companies
- 90% of Chengdu's technology businesses
- 49 Fortune 500 technology companies
Big numbers, big opportunities. Hear from Han Ye, Chief Representative of Chengdu Hi-tech Zone in the UK, about how Chengdu can be your entry point into China's rapidly growing domestic market. When business thinks of China, it usually thinks of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen and other locations known for their fast rates of growth. But nowadays, favoured by government policy and financial support, China's western and central areas are considered to be the new areas of opportunity. Amongst the cities in Central and West China, Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, stands out as a hub for communications, finance and business, and as well as a centre for science & technology.
Last year, Chengdu's economy grew 14.7%, much faster than well-known coastal cities, while actual foreign investment grew an impressive 24.6%. Some 139 of the World Top 500 companies now have a presence in Chengdu. Chengdu has a 12 million strong population with a highly educated work force and a growing pool of middle class consumers. Furthermore, owing to a significant exposure to international business practices, its well established technology sector (ICT, Semiconductor, Pharmaceuticals and Precision engineering) is very accessible to foreign companies.
In 2009, Chengdu's Hi-tech Zone selected the UK as a base to set up its first overseas office. Its Chief Representative Han Ye would like to share a range of practical information about doing business in Chengdu and setting up there to supply advanced products and equipment to China's domestic market. Chengdu has recently become Sheffield's partner city in China. Chengdu Hi-tech Zone offers customized facilities, a favourable business environment and tax incentives to foreign technology businesses.
