Pioneering climate change in Yorkshire
A £50m project is to be set up in our region, putting Yorkshire at the forefront of research for a low-carbon economy. The first 4 pilot projects will look at climate change, low-carbon supply chains, bio-renewables and carbon-capture technology.
What is the project?
This virtual project, entitled the Centre for Low Carbon Futures, will create a world-class research and training facility. It will combine the expertise of universities in Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York, and is backed by Yorkshire Forward.
What’s the purpose?
The centre has two main aims:
- to create a sustainable regional economy
- to research ways of coping with climate change.
Researchers will provide practical solutions for ways in which organisations in our region can reduce their carbon emissions. The idea is to generate workable solutions for businesses and communities, promoting the uptake of innovations and creating change in the real world.
What’s the significance of this project to our region?
Yorkshire & Humber has ambitious targets for cutting carbon emissions, and is already investing heavily in environmental technologies. It is expected that the centre’s leading-edge research will be extended for use across the country and the rest of the world.
