Bridge gets £6m for repair work
28/10/2009
Essential maintenance work is set to begin on the Humber Bridge after the Government announced £6 million of funding.
Transport Minister Sadiq Khan revealed the decision, which will allow crucial maintenance work to be carried out on the vital transport link. It will also prevent an increase in tolls for at least the next 18 months.
Mr Khan said: "The Humber Bridge is a vital transport link between North Lincolnshire and East Riding which has and continues to provide many opportunities and benefits.
"It is also why I have today awarded £6 million funding for the Bridge Board to carry out essential maintenance work."
The move will allow The Bridge Board to meets it legal obligation to repay the Humber Bridge debt on time. This eradicates the need to precept local authorities.
The funding will ensure local people and businesses can continue to enjoy the bridge's significant benefits for many years to come.
Users are already benefiting from a decision by the Minister earlier this year to protect communities and businesses by not allowing the Bridge Board's proposed toll increase.
