High-speed net for rural villages

07/04/2010

A ground-breaking scheme has seen two rural North Yorkshire villages connect to the internet via high-speed broadband.
This landmark project is the first one if its kind in England, and has brought the internet to Newton-on-Radcliffe and Stape, both 4 miles from Pickering. This has allowed businesses and residents to reap the benefits of the rapid access to the web.
Three companies, Yorkshire-based NextGenUs UK CIC, rural broadband specialists Beeline Broadband and NYnet - which was created by Yorkshire Forward and North Yorkshire County Council with investment from the European Union - have made this project possible.
Mike Steele, of Kale Pot Hole, 5 miles east of Stape, said the 10Mbps broadband connection has allowed him to run his event management company and holiday cottage more efficiently.
Mr Steele said: "The broadband connection has made an incredible difference to my life. It has reduced my working hours and given me time to keep in touch with my family who are spread all over the world, via web cam."
