White rose of Yorkshire remembered

30/07/2009

The annual celebration of soldiers from Yorkshire regiments who fought in the battle of Minden in Germany in 1759 is to include the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.
He will lead the main Yorkshire Day Civic Procession from Ryedale District Council's headquarters for a service at St Michael's Church in Malton on Saturday.
The Yorkshire Society procession is held in a different town or city every year, and honours the region`s history and heritage by celebrating all things Yorkshire.
It is held on August 1 to remember the soldiers who picked white roses, the symbol of Yorkshire, as tribute to their fallen comrades.
Said Ryedale District Council chairman Di Keal: "I think it will be a lovely day and I hope the crowds will come out to support the procession. We`ve got a very nice service planned, and it is a privilege to have the Archbishop visiting."
