Work has started on the six-acre City Park in Bradford, an ambitious regeneration project that is expected to provide a major boost to the local economy.

Built in the heart of the city centre, the park will be the size of four football fields and will feature a "mirror pool" that can be drained quickly to host a range of large-scale public events.

Bradford City Council, which is leading the project, recently appointed Yorkshire-based Birse Civils as the main contractor.

Council leader Kris Hopkins, who was present at the official opening of construction work on the site, said: "City Park is about much more than creating an attractive urban environment, it's about social and economic sustainability, job creation, economic investment, tourism and communities."

Yorkshire Forward chief executive Tom Riordan said the project emphasised the public sector commitment to investing in Bradford's future.

He added: "The City Park scheme will not only be a flagship development for the city, but a catalyst to further development and inward investment as we move towards a better economic climate."
