York could be getting its first ever five star venue in the shape of a new £20 million hotel, set to open in the spring.
Yorkshire's biggest independent hotel group Cedar Court Hotels is opening the Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa, which boasts 107 bedrooms, at the ex-North Eastern Railway Company headquarters in the city centre.
The plush Cedar Court Grand will include five meeting rooms for up to 20 people, the Directors room (formerly the Chairman's office) which can accommodate up to 40, and the Boardroom, with space for 120 guests.
A decking area overlooking the York city wall will be spacious enough to accommodate a marquee for 300, and there will be a cocktail bar, restaurant and private dining rooms.
An exclusive Spa will offer bespoke treatments, along with a sauna room, steam room, pool and gym.
Andrew Coney, who has previously been general manager at London's five-star Waldorf and The Cavendish, will be the hotel's general manager.
Mr Coney said: "The former North Eastern Railway Company (NERC) headquarters is one of York's most iconic buildings, so there is considerable anticipation in the city about its reinvention as Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa. When it's unveiled early next year, 'The Grand' will become a new landmark in York."
