Bridlington marina takes shape

20/04/2009

A further step in the development of Bridlington Marina has been taken this week as plans are given the all clear from experts testing the viability of the new marina against North Sea and environmental conditions.

A review of the possible demand for places in the new marina gave the marina steering group confidence to identify a number of possible outline layouts.

Under the proposals the marina, which will expand Bridlington Harbour, will include 215 pontoon moorings, with 105 more to be located in a new outer harbour. The move will make Bridlington the second largest coastal marina in the north east after Hartlepool and will ease the problem of available berths in the region and reduce waiting lists at Scarborough and Whitby.

Using high tech computer software, experts H R Wallingford have now analysed their surveys of the waves and currents in the bay to show how they would react to the layouts put forward by the steering group.   The results of the investigations have revealed that any expected problems will be dealt with by fine tuning the layout.

As a major step forward for the partnership, design discussions surrounding the layout of the marina can continue. West 8, the urban design consultants working with the Bridlington Renaissance Town Team and the Council to link the marina and town centre together will join the Council’s and Harbour Commissioners’ engineers once more, to progress the marina design.

Jan Anderson, Director of Environment at Yorkshire Forward comments: “This is great news, not just for the marina itself, but the economic development of Bridlington as a whole. Once the layout has been fine tuned, the partnership aim to carry out further studies on the cost and nature of the build.”

George Traves, Chair of Bridlington Harbour Commissioners said, “The technical consultants have shown us that with some modifications, the ideas put forward for the marina can work with the North Sea conditions”

Stephen Parnaby OBE, Leader of  East Riding of Yorkshire Council said, “We are pleased to have reached this milestone in the process and are looking forward to working with the Commissioners on the next stage”.
