Yorkshire Forward’s Chief Executive has been awarded the Green Champion accolade at the prestigious Yorkshire Post Environment Awards.
Tom Riordan has been selected as the individual who has done the most to promote environmental measures in the region, following his visionary work in shifting Yorkshire and Humber’s focus towards a low carbon, green energy-led future.
The environmental work of businesses, residents and community groups from across the region was also recognised at a special celebration held at the Queens Hotel in Leeds, which was hosted by TV presenter Julia Bradbury, with Environment Secretary Hilary Benn as guest speaker.
Tom Riordan commented on his win; “It’s a genuine privilege to be recognised by the region in this way. I take it as a real vote of confidence in Yorkshire Forward’s work on the low carbon economy, which is the result of a huge amount of hard work by people in and outside the organisation.
“Yorkshire and Humber has a great chance of becoming renowned in the UK and further afield for tackling climate change in a way that creates jobs and lowers emissions, and plays to our industrial, geographic and historical strengths”.
Yorkshire Forward-funded CO2Sense, a business support and market development programme, also celebrated after several of its projects walked away with awards and commendations
Community-based hydro-electric scheme, Settle Hydro picked up the Community award and Scarborough-based Econoplas, which makes drainage products from recycled plastics, took the Manufacturer of the Best Green Product award. Both have received funding, advice and support from CO2Sense.
