Goole to see new 25 year plan revitalise town centre

15/06/2009

Goole is to gain a 25 year Masterplan with the help of the Yorkshire Forward Renaissance Towns Programme as the Agency looks to help guide the future investment and development of Goole, home to the country’s largest inland port.

This will see Yorkshire Forward working with partners, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and lead consultant LDA Design to put in place a Development Framework for the Port and Town with the help of Goole’s residential and business community to develop the plan, and deliver change.

The Development Framework is a Masterplan that will set out a clear vision for the regeneration of Goole and identify specific projects to be taken forward by the Development Agency in conjunction with the Council. This will build on investments already made in Capitol Park and the Junction Arts Centre due to open later this year.

LDA Design, will be talking to the Goole community over the coming months as they hold a series of events, a community planning weekend, and create a community led Town Team to guide the process.

The Town Team will include residents and local stakeholders and will ensure that the Framework takes into consideration the social and economic needs of the community to create a long-term solution for the town’s future prosperity. They will focus on ensuring that an appropriate local strategic response is developed, and that the masterplan successfully brings together high-quality design, buildings and public space, with new business and job opportunities focused on the Port area and the town centre.

David Custance, Assistant Director of Environment at Yorkshire Forward comments:”Yorkshire Forward’s Renaissance Towns & Cities programme was developed to ensure that our region’s urban areas are places where people want to live work and invest. In addition to the physical changes in our towns, we also want to raise ambitions and aspiration - transforming the way our towns are perceived by residents, visitors and investors. We are working with East Riding Council and LDA Design to offer the Goole community exciting new approaches to how the town could look and function in the future and bringing these ideas to fruition.

East Riding Council Leader, Stephen Parnaby comments: "This is great news for Goole and the surrounding area, which will put it at the forefront for investment and jobs. I look forward to the continued improvement in the town, the port and employment sites such as Junction 36."

As the next chapter of the town’s Partnership approach to regeneration, plans will now be taken forward by an Expert Panel, led by LDA Design. The panel will include consultants involved in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Transport Planning, Civil and Structural Engineering, Market and Property Analysis, Socio-Economic Research, and Community Engagement.
