Unemployment Data

Every month, Yorkshire Forward obtain monthly unemployment tables from Taylor Associates, and include tables for all sub-regions within Yorkshire and Humber, and also claimant unemployment by broad ethnic group. These are designed to complement the above briefing. Ethnic data is released one-month after.

Unemployment Rate Definitions

Claimant Count: an administrative count of people claiming unemployment related benefit on the day of the count each month.

ILO Unemployment: the definition recommended by the International Labour Organisation and used in the Office for National Statistics' Labour Force Survey / Annual Population Survey. It is also the definition used in Eurostat comparisons of unemployment rates between EU member states.

The ILO definition is survey based and counts as unemployed everyone who is without a job, who are available to start work in the two weeks following interview and who have looked for work in the four weeks prior to interview; or are out of work but have accepted a job which they are waiting to start in the next fortnight.

The ILO rates published each month by the Office for National Statistics are based on a three month rolling average from the Labour Force Survey / Annual Population Survey, and are not directly comparable with the ILO unemployment rate estimates relating to a specific month.

All Seeking or Wanting Work: This is a very broad measure derived from the Labour Force Survey and estimates the total unmet demand for jobs among people not currently in employment. It includes the ILO unemployed plus all those without work who were either looking for a job or state that they would like a job if one was available. Not all these people would be available to start work straight away (for example, childcare might need to be arranged) and it is probable that many included in this category will only be available for part-time work.

Jobs database

The Chief Economist Unit produces monthly updates of the regional jobs database which tracks press announcements about job losses and gains across the region from a range of sources. It breaks down job losses and gains on a planned and confirmed basis across local authorities. It also contains descriptive information relating to each loss.

This database was previously produced by Oxford Economics.
